Service Technician

Service Technician

Position Summary: Primarily responsible for performing repairs and maintenance to a variety of equipment including: refrigeration, air conditioning, electric motors, heating units, heat pumps, hermetic compressors, light commercial furnaces, boilers, burners, intake and exhaust fans, economizers and humidifiers.

Reports To: Field Supervisor

FLSA Status: Full-time, Non-Exempt

Salary Level: Hourly based on skills and abilities

ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

  1. Understands basic refrigeration cycle to include: identifying components in refrigeration circuit, understanding how each component works, diagnosing problems in the refrigeration circuit, using manifold gauge set, pressure/temperature chart and temperature measuring devices for routine maintenance and to troubleshoot. Understands refrigeration recovery, evacuation and charging.
  2. Understands basic electron theory, how electricity travels, AC and DC currents, single phase and three phase circuits, and series and parallel circuits. Ability to read basic wiring diagrams. Understanding of Ohms Law. Ability to use multi-meters to read voltage, current and resistance values. Must be able to troubleshoot basic electrical circuits.
  3. Understands the process of treating air so as to simultaneously control its temperature, humidity, and distribution. Must be able to read and understand mechanical drawings.
  4. Understands basic heating cycle to include: identifying components in heating system, understanding how each component works, diagnosing problems in the heating system using a gas pressure test and other devices for routine maintenance and to troubleshoot. Understands the theory of combustion and how it relates to combustible fuels such as gas and oil.

ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL SKILLS REQUIRED:

A Service Technician must be able to install, repair, adjust, maintain and troubleshoot the following equipment:

  1. Refrigerant controls (metering devices)
  2. Hermetic compressors
  3. Heat Pumps to 5-ton
  4. Split systems to 5-ton
  5. Packaged units to 12-ton
  6. Ductless splits
  7. Electric Motors (3-phase and 1-phase)
  8. Electric motor controls (contractors, starters, relays, disconnect, thermostats, etc.)
  9. Light commercial furnaces, boilers, burners and related controls
  10. Various types of water pumps
  11. Intake and exhaust fans
  12. Unit heaters (hot water, steam and electric)
  13. Economizers
  14. Humidifiers

A Service Technician must be able to proficiently perform the following tasks:

  1. Soldering
  2. Brazing
  3. Basic heat load calculations
  4. Basic heat loss calculations

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

  1. Must have an EPA Certification and at least 3 years of trade-related work experience, OR.
  2. Any similar combination of education and experience.
  3. Must have a high school diploma or equivalent GED certificate.
  4. NATE Certificate

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Valid MI driver’s License with a good driving record
  2. On-call and overtime hours as needed
  3. Must adhere to the company uniform policy
  4. Must be able to pass a criminal background check
  5. Ability to pass drug test at any time

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to pass physical exam
  • Must pass drug test

It is the responsibility of the Installer to install HVAC systems and any other related HVAC components correctly and in a timely manner with or without a helper.

Reports To: Field Supervisor

FLSA Status: Full-time, Non-Exempt

Salary Level: Hourly based on skills and abilities

ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

  1. Work safely following company policies
  2. Install HVAC related equipment according to manufacturer’s specifications
  3. Wire both line and low voltage to heating and cooling equipment
  4. Install copper refrigerant lines to air conditioning units, including brazing
  5. Install sheet metal and flex duct systems in residential and light commercial buildings
  6. Properly connect gas lines to heating equipment
  7. Premeasure jobs to identify proper materials required for install
  8. Receive, verify and load all equipment and materials needed for each job
  9. Provide assistance to other installs as directed by management
  10. Demonstrate and establish effective working relationships with co-workers and superiors
  11. Properly fill out all paperwork required for each job
  12. Take all readings on a machine and understand the importance of such
  13. Maintain cleanliness of assigned company vehicle
  14. Any other assigned duties as directed by management

ESSENTIAL WORK SKILLS REQUIRED:

  1. Must have excellent written & verbal communications skills
  2. Excellent customer service and problem solving skills
  3. Honest and dependable
  4. Must possess excellent time management skills
  5. Must be able to deal with difficult people
  6. Must have excellent organizational skills
  7. Must be self-motivated but able to take direction and work well with other technicians and tradesman

EDUCATION EXPERIENCE:

  1. Minimum 3 years’ experience installing
  2. EPA Certification a plus
  3. High School Diploma or Equivalent
  4. NATE certificate a plus
