Benefits of HEPA Filters for Michigan Homes

As Michigan homeowners prepare for colder weather, windows stay closed, furnaces begin running more often, and families spend more time indoors. That makes fall an excellent time to think about something you can't always see: the quality of the air inside your home.

Dust, pollen, pet dander and other airborne particles can circulate throughout a house. For homeowners looking for improved filtration, HEPA filters are well known for their ability to capture very small airborne particles.

But what exactly is a HEPA filter, what are its benefits, and can you simply put one in your furnace?

At Mike's Heating & Cooling, we've been helping homeowners throughout Utica, Shelby Township, Macomb Township, Sterling Heights, Clinton Township, Washington Township, Rochester Hills and surrounding Southeast Michigan communities improve their home comfort since 1979.

What Is a HEPA Filter?

HEPA stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Air.

To meet the commonly used HEPA standard, a filter must be capable of capturing at least 99.97% of airborne particles that are 0.3 microns in diameter under specified test conditions.

That makes true HEPA filtration considerably more effective at capturing small particles than many basic residential HVAC filters.

HEPA filters can capture particles such as:

  • Dust

  • Pollen

  • Pet dander

  • Mold spores

  • Fine airborne particles

  • Some bacteria and other microscopic particles

It's important to understand, however, that HEPA filtration isn't automatically appropriate for every furnace or HVAC system. More on that below.

1. HEPA Filters Can Capture Very Small Airborne Particles

One of the biggest advantages of HEPA filtration is particle-capturing efficiency.

Many particles floating through your home's air are too small to see. As your family moves around the house, particles can become airborne and circulate from room to room.

A properly designed HEPA filtration system can remove a very high percentage of these particles from the air passing through it.

For homeowners particularly concerned about indoor air quality, that can make HEPA filtration an option worth considering.

2. Reduce Airborne Dust

Does it seem like you clean the house only to find another layer of dust shortly afterward?

Some household dust settles onto furniture and flooring, while other particles remain suspended in the air.

Higher-efficiency filtration can capture more of those airborne particles before they continue circulating throughout your home.

A filtration upgrade won't eliminate the need to dust, but it may help reduce the amount of airborne particulate matter circulating through the HVAC system.

3. Capture Pollen

Michigan's beautiful changing seasons aren't always great news for indoor air quality.

Outdoor pollen can enter your house on clothing, shoes, pets or simply when doors and windows are opened.

Once inside, some of those particles can become airborne.

HEPA filtration is capable of capturing extremely small particles, including pollen, as air passes through the filter.

4. Help Control Pet Dander

We love our pets, but dogs and cats can contribute to the particles circulating through a home.

Pet dander consists of tiny particles shed by animals. Because these particles can become airborne, effective filtration can help capture some of the dander passing through a filtration system.

For Michigan households with pets, improved air filtration may be a useful part of an overall indoor air quality strategy.

5. Capture Some Airborne Mold Spores

Mold spores can become airborne and travel through indoor spaces.

HEPA filters can capture many particles in the size range associated with mold spores as air passes through the filtration system.

However, a HEPA filter does not fix a mold or moisture problem.

If mold is growing inside a home, the underlying source of moisture needs to be identified and corrected. Filtration should not be considered a substitute for addressing the cause of mold growth.

6. Improve Overall Indoor Air Quality

Your home may look perfectly clean while still containing airborne particles.

That's why indoor air quality involves more than simply vacuuming and dusting.

A complete approach can include proper HVAC filtration, humidity control, ventilation, regular cleaning and professional HVAC maintenance.

For some homes, upgrading filtration can be an important part of that strategy.

HEPA Filters vs. Standard Furnace Filters

Here's where homeowners need to be careful.

You shouldn't simply find the highest-efficiency filter available and install it in your furnace.

More filtration can also mean greater resistance to airflow.

Your HVAC system was designed to move a certain amount of air. Installing a filter that is too restrictive for the equipment or ductwork can potentially reduce airflow.

Poor airflow can contribute to comfort problems and place unnecessary stress on HVAC equipment.

That's why filter selection should consider both filtration efficiency and proper system airflow.

Can I Put a HEPA Filter in My Furnace?

Not necessarily.

True HEPA filtration can create significantly more airflow resistance than a typical residential furnace filter. Many conventional HVAC systems aren't designed to accommodate a true HEPA filter directly in the standard filter slot.

Depending on the home and HVAC equipment, better options may include a properly sized high-efficiency media air cleaner, a dedicated HEPA filtration system or another indoor air quality solution designed to work with the existing system.

Before making a major filtration upgrade, have an HVAC professional evaluate your equipment and ductwork.

What About MERV Ratings?

When shopping for HVAC filters, you'll also frequently see a MERV rating.

MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value and is used to describe how effectively an air filter captures particles within certain size ranges.

Generally, a higher MERV rating means greater particle filtration. But again, higher isn't automatically better for every HVAC system.

The goal is to choose a filter that provides effective filtration without restricting the airflow your equipment needs.

Mike's Heating & Cooling can help determine an appropriate filtration option based on your particular HVAC system.

HEPA Filters Don't Solve Every Indoor Air Quality Problem

HEPA filtration can be excellent at capturing particles, but it is important to understand its limitations.

A HEPA filter isn't designed to solve every indoor air quality concern. For example, particle filtration alone doesn't necessarily address all odors, gases, excessive or insufficient humidity, ventilation issues, or the source of mold growth.

That's why we prefer looking at the whole home's indoor air quality needs rather than simply recommending the most restrictive filter available.

Fall Is a Great Time to Evaluate Your Indoor Air Quality

October is an ideal time for Michigan homeowners to think about air quality.

Once colder weather arrives, your home is closed up and your furnace may operate for hours every day. That means your heating and air distribution system plays an increasingly important role in your family's indoor environment.

When you schedule your fall furnace maintenance, it's also a good opportunity to discuss:

  • Your current furnace filter

  • Filter replacement frequency

  • Airflow

  • Higher-efficiency filtration options

  • Whole-home humidification

  • Other indoor air quality concerns

Preparing now can help your HVAC system—and your indoor environment—be ready for the months ahead.
